No Love Lost Essay -- Literary Analysis, A Doll’s House
For a play about marriage A Doll’s House does not have much love in it. All of the characters claim to love each other, but are really concealing other emotions. The expectations of society have forced them into love that they do not feel. This false love is what causes them to fall apart in the end. The play is riddled with marriages that are born out of convenience or expectation rather than love. Every character only loves in ways that they are expected to, and only continue to love for convenience’s sake. There is no love in A Doll’s House. Torvald treats Nora as a child, not an equal; he is not really in love with her. The most glaring examples of this are his pet names for her. He likes to think of her as a small, delicate creature that needs saving and protecting. Although this may seem like normal fare for a loving marriage, he takes it too far. Nora is not the type of woman that appreciates this sort of treatment, so it turns from affectionate to demeaning. He thinks that demeaning his wife is not only acceptable, but normal for a relationship saying â€Å"I wouldn’t be a man if your feminine vulnerability didn’t make you doubly attractive to me†(82). This is not a good base for their relationship, as it prevents him from giving Nora the kind of attention that she needs. She does not need the kind of doting attention that he gives her, she wants to talk as an equal. She want to be â€Å"bothered †¦ with all sorts of problems [she] couldn’t possibly helped [him] to cope with†(84) as that would allow her to help her with his life, and give them the kind of relationship that Nora needs to survive. He does not love her, he loves treating her this way. As a matter of fact, Nora describes his relationship with her best, when she says... ... â€Å"[he’ll] be able to find a way to redeem [himself] in people’s eyes†(69). He does not love her, he needs the social support. They have found each other after having being lost for many years, but it is not a romantic reunion. It is a calculation on both of their parts for their own greater individual happiness. A Doll’s House contains many relationships, but all of them are bad. From convenience to infatuation, Ibsen’s work seems to be a manual on bad reasons to love someone. Every single character has some personalized version of love, and none of them seem to bear any resemblance to real love. Whether they find it convenient to love for respect or because love was their only choice at the time, none of them know real love. It is as though Ibsen wanted to show how some of the many reasons for love at the time were wrong and would lead to problems later in life.

Conference For Marketing Professionals
Introduction: Every year the University of Hertfordshire (UoH) hosts a conference for marketing professionals. The event is held at the de Havilliand campus and attracts approximately 100 attendees annually.  This gathering has not traditionally been monitored to determine attendee satisfaction or to determine the rate of return attendance. To correct this oversight, a program will be developed to determine the rate of satisfaction for forum attendees and for those presenting at the forum. (72 words) Objectives: The primary objective of this study will be to determine the effectiveness of the program as it currently exists. A secondary objective will be to identify areas that require modification and the third objective will be to determine if presenters are satisfied with the quality of attendees and the opportunities to present to them. A further goal of this project will be to evaluate the opportunities for growth of the forum. The study will use quantitative research to gather opinions from attendees. This form of market research is very commonly accepted as a means to determine client satisfaction. (98 words this section/170 total) Research Design This project will be via a questionnaire given to all conference attendees. A separate questionnaire will be developed for the presenters. The primary questionnaire will be comprised of 10 questions to which the respondent will be asked to give a numerical response between one and five. This numerical representation of satisfaction will then be averaged, with extremes taken into consideration, to determine an arithmetic mean. In addition, we will have five questions requesting short answers. These purely subjective answers will be recorded as anecdotal responses and anecdotal evidence regarding satisfaction with the conference. The secondary questionnaire will also consist of fifteen questions divided in the same manner. The subjective questions will be the same for both the questionnaires. The questions for the primary questionnaire will be as follows: Please respond with a number between 1 and 5. 1 is the lowest/worst response and 5 is the highest/best. 1.      Did you enjoy the conference? 2.     Were the seminars useful to you? 3.     Did this conference assist you in furthering your career? 4.     Was the keynote speaker helpful? 5.     Was the meal served adequate? 6.     Was this seminar worth the cost of attendance? 7.     Was this a useful way to spend your day? 8.     Were the presenters helpful? 9.     Did you learn anything new at this conference? 10. Given the chance, would you attend this conference again? The subjective questions for both questionnaires would be: 1.     What improvements would you like to see made to the conference? 2.     What was the best part of the conference? 3.     What was the worst part of the conference? 4.     Were you satisfied with the opportunities provided at the conference? 5.     What should the conference committee know about your visit? The secondary questionnaires would include the following questions: 1.     Did you enjoy the conference? 2.     Were the conference attendees of the quality you expected? 3.     Were the seminars useful to you? 4.     Did you enjoy the keynote speaker? 5.     Was the meal served adequate? 6.     Would you attend the conference again? 7.     Did the quality of materials provided today meet your expectations? 8.     Did you learn anything new at this conference? 9.     Was this a useful way to spend your day? 10. Did you hire staff/find prospects today? (Words 327/ total words 497). Data collection – Methodology This questionnaire will be given to every attendee at the conference prior to the last session of the day. We will offer a door prize to be mailed to the winner at a later date in an effort to encourage more people to respond to the questionnaire. To receive the prize, a respondent would have to list their name and address at the top of the questionnaire. This will also assist us in developing a mailing list for the conference next year. We will have staff move through the crowd as they are leaving, reminding people to turn in their questionnaires via a drop box by the door or by handing them to conference staff. It is anticipated that by offering a random door prize in association with compliance in completing the questionnaire, we should be able to increase the return rate for the questionnaire. (Words 145, total words 642) Sampling plan As previously discussed, the intention will be reach 100 percent penetration with these questionnaires. We will have two different colors for the surveys so that we may quickly differentiate between presenters and attendees responses. We will also consider the possibility of conducting a follow up survey via random sampling based on the attendance list. This survey would be conducted via telephone. The secondary survey would only be conducted if the primary survey has an inadequate response. If the secondary survey is necessary, the sampling member would be random, taking every third name on the attendance roster and rotating through the list until a sample of not less than 10 percent nor more than 20 percent is achieved. (Words 117, total words 759) Data Analysis Once the information is gathered, the first effort will be made to determine if there are consistent groupings of results or an outriders, which are indicative of an extremely dissatisfied (or satisfied) individual. Once this analysis is complete, each individual question will be evaluated to find the mean and determine where that overall satisfaction levels falls on the continuum scale established in our questions. For our purposes here, we will be looking at each of the questions individually and then will also be taking a combined average using all of the questions to determine the overall satisfaction with the event. In addition, we will be compiling a list of the anecdotal responses to the questionnaire. These responses will be listed, completely unedited, as feedback for the committee which puts the conference together. Obscene or threatening comments will be deleted as irrelevant. The questionnaires from the presenters will be analyzed separately, using the same analysis method. (Words 155, total words 914) Timetable and Budget The initial budget for this project should be less than $250. We anticipate spending $100 to acquire two gift cards to be awarded to two randomly selected persons who return their questionnaires. The additional expenses will be used to develop and print the questionnaires and for computer analysis of the results. Providing that we receive adequate response numbers from the questionnaires at the conference, it is anticipated that the research report can be delivered within two weeks after the end of the conference with the primary work being conducted the day of the conference. If the questionnaires do not receive adequate response to provide the market report that we desire, the time table will be extended by two weeks and the budget will be doubled, as the project will suddenly have telephone expenses in addition to the previously outlined expenses. (Words 140, total words 1054) Personnel Involved The personnel involved in this project will be the researcher and all members of the conference staff, who will be asked to remind attendees of the need for the return of questionnaires. Conference personnel will be asked to hand out the questionnaires as part of the attendees registration packet and to collect the questionnaires in the final moments of the conference. In addition, we will ask presenters to remind attendees throughout the conference that they need to turn in their questionnaires. Mccarthyism In The Crucible - 1743 Words
In Arthur Miller s powerful play The Crucible, written in 1953 as a allegory and metaphor for the McCarthy hearings on communism in America, the idea of conscience is greatly emphasized in many of the main characters. Arthur Miller wrote the play The Crucible in response to the red scare of the 1950’s, in which he was was condemned for disrespect disapproval of the United States Congress for being unsuccessful in naming numerous individuals who had attended meetings with him. In a bid to not only secure his career as a journalist and playwright and also to alert the American people against the government misinformation and propaganda that were headed their way. This is an example of a colorful metaphor; they can also characterize, depending on who is using the most metaphors. Parris’s colorful language is appropriate for a preacher, he uses many metaphors for example, â€Å"This way, unconfessed and claiming innocence, doubts are multiplied, many honest people will weep for them, a nd our good purpose is lost in their tears†(Act 4). This quotes allows Parris’s point to continue in a nonliteral way. Reverend Parris is used to using words in order to make his point, he likes to exploit words like he exploits people. While he is not the only one to use metaphors, his tendencies are to whip up emotions to suit his purposes. Parris not only is a great examples of metaphors but Elizabeth comes with great illustration; in act 4 Elizabeth states â€Å"i have read my heart three month†¦ i have sins of my own court†. In each case, these metaphors also are useful for characterization; They demonstrated how she is thoughtful, repentant, and self-sacrificing. People within the play are generally under stress, and experiencing a period of great difficulty. They speak in colorful language because dramatic times call for dramatic languages. Psychology allows us to do this. It is the study of people. This science allows us to look into who we are and what we are. By understanding what and how everything you do can help you make improvements. This allows the body and mind to work together, so it can give you the knowledge to help make better decisions and avoid stressful situations. It can help you achieve goals and you live comfortably with others. Both of my parents have always been very loving and given me everything I needed, but at least to me, they always seemed to be more on the strict side with me than they were with my brother. I was never allowed to many of the things my brother was allowed to do and when I tried to make the argument that their rules were unfair, they always looked at me and said, â€Å"He’s a boy, you’re a girl.†This inequality in treatment put a tremendous strain on me and what the expectations I felt that I had to live up to. I feel like my parents strict and cold style effected me in both negative and positive ways. I feel that it made me become a much harder worker who was more motivated to achieve certain goals but it also caused a lot of insecurities when I failed at something. Moving on into my adolescent years wasn’t any easier. I had no idea who I was. In fact, I changed my wardrobe and what I was into doing quite often throughout middle school. Medication Administration Errors in Hospitals-Samples for Students
Question: Discuss about the Incorrect administration of an S8 Medication. Answer: Description The case study is based on an error in medication, which is on an incorrect administration of an S8 drug. The incident involved a newly graduated nurse and Mary who is her colleague. The registered nurse has been working for six months and receiving full support from the Nurse Unit Manager, this implies that, the nurse had some prior experience and knowledge on protocols to be used in drug administration before. The nurse has a good working relationship with the other nurses. During one of her medical rounds in the wards, Mary requested the nurse to conduct an S8 drug check. As the graduated nurse also wanted to administer her patient with the similar medication of S8, she agreed to go to the drug cupboard together. Both Mary and the graduated nurse refer to the medical charts of their patients so that they can know the drugs they were to administer the patients. Mary needed Endone 5mg, she counted the drugs and placed them in the drug cup, similary, she counts the medication needed by the graduated nurses patient, which is Targin 5/2.5mg and places it in a different drug cup. Mary hen locked the medication cupboard carrying with her the medical charts for both patients. Mary and the graduated nurse start by attending Marys patient . They follow the medical rpocedures before giving the patient the medication. On ensuring the patient has taken the drugs, they note on the register before moving to the next patient where they conduct drug check and patient identification. Unfortunately, the graduated nurse realized that they had done an error in medication. the graduated nurse had given Marys patient Targin instead of Endone. Mary questions the graduated nurses competence in handling medication. she feels dispirited but she has to report the incident to the Unit Nurse Manager so that an immediate action can be taken to ensure the safety of the patient. Factors leading to the Incident The major factor leading to the incident is the failure to carry out the three drug check properly. Despite the nurses conducting the drug check, they never did it effectively leading to error in medication. The three drug check requires nurses to check the drugs three times before giving them to the patients, this means that, the drug should be checked before and after administering (Excellence, 2013). The aim is to ensure that the right drug and dosage is administered to the right patient at the right time and through the right method (Westbrook, Lehnbom, Baysari, Braithwaite, Burke Day, 2015). The first check that the nurses should have done was to take the drugs from the medical cupboard and compare it to what is given in the patients medical record to check if they are agreeing. The second check would have been done before giving it to the patient and the third check was to check the drug after administering it to the patient (Kim Bates, 2013). Mary and the graduate nurse cond ucted the first drug check when retrieving it from the medical cupboard, which they compare to what is given in the medical chart. However, the nurse fails o conduct the second drug check which is done right before giving the patient the medication. In this case, the nurse does not identify the correct S8 medication for her patients as she does not take her time to check the drug label for the second time before giving it to her patient. Error in medication can be detrimental, therefore, it is imperative for healthcare providers to conduct the three drug check in order to avoid such mistakes (McLeod, Barber Franklin, 2013). The other factor that had contributed to the error is the failure by the nurses to execute their duties autonomously. Each nurse was assigned their specific patient and each nurse was supposed to administer the S8 medication to their assigned patient. In this case, after taking the drugs from the cupboard, each nurse could have confirmed the drugs meant for their patient . However, this was not done. Mary allowed the registered nurse to administer the drugs on her behalf, which is a mistake. If she had administered the medication herself, she would have been in a better position to identify the drugs before giving it to the patient. therefore, it is imperative for nurses to execute their duties independently to avoid confusions and errors in medication (Alsulami, Choonara Conroy, 2014). Finally, lack of pharmaceutical knowledge played a role in the incident. From the case study analysis, the graduated nurse had been working in the wards for only six months, this means that, she might have lacked the pharmaceutical experience and knowledge in drug administration. Such knowledge is essential for healthcare providers to identify drugs. Therefore, it is important for nurses to enhance their pharmaceutical knowledge to enable them differentiate between medications (Ashcroft, Lewis,Tully, Farragher, Taylor, Wass Dornan, 2015). What I would have done differently In my future practice as a nurse, I will make sure I follow the three drug check to avoid mistakes. For instance, I had two medical cups, therefore, I would have been keen on the drug I was administering to the patient. One of the best way I will do this is by being careful when preparing the medication for my patients and by following drug administration procedures. According to the NSQHS standards on the safety of medication states that healthcare providers should follow the three drug check when giving patients medications to avoid mistakes (Flanigan, 2016). In this case, to avoid such mistakes from happening, first, during the medical checks, I will confirm more than ones to ensure the right patient receives the correct medication. in addition, I will also ensure that I follow the proper procedures when administering drugs, which include giving the right medication to the right patient, at a correct dose, and at the right time. For instance, in the incidence, two patients were re ceiving medication which is almost similar, I would have advised the nurses to label the drugs according to the drug names. By doing so, it would have been easier for the graduated nurse to identify which medication belonged to which patient. In addition, at the bed side before giving the patient the medication, I could have used patient identifiers to enable me identify the correct drug I was giving the patient. the most ideal ways to identify the patient is by checking their identification number or name either verbally, manually, or electronically to ensure the patients details are correct before giving them the medicine. Also, drug confirmation is imperative as it reduces confusions, which can lead to errors (Nanji, Patel, Shaikh, Seger Bates, 2016). In this case, if I was in this kind of situation, I would have confirmed the drugs before giving them to the patients. Alternatively, instead of me giving the medication to both patients, I would have requested Mary to administer the medication to her patient as I did to mine to avoid confusions. In addition, I would have considered revising on my pharmaceutical knowledge in order to broaden my knowledge on drugs and medication. Finally, according to the NMBA codes of professional conduct and standards, it is important for healthcare providers to follow protocol when administering medication (Australian Nursing Council, 2003) . For instance, each nurse was assigned specific patients and no nurse should handle the others patient unless proper communication is given from the doctor. King Solomon wrote wisely, and later was wisely paraphrased by the folk band â€Å"The Byrds†, â€Å"To everything there is a season and a time to every purpose under heaven †(Ecclesiastes 3:1,8). Seasons often represent the periods of a person’s life; birth, youth, age and death. In the short story â€Å"Summer†by David Updike, the lake provides an eternal and unchanging witness to Homer’s transition from season to season and from boy to man. In the beginning we find the family and its surrogate son, Homer, enjoying the fruits of the summer. Homer wakes to find Mrs. Thyme sitting alone, â€Å"looking out across the flat blue stillness of the lake†(48). This gives us a sense of the calm, eternal feeling the lake presents and of Mrs. Thyme’s appreciation of it. Later, Fred and Homer wildly drive the motor boat around the lake, exerting their boyish enthusiasm. The lake is unaffected by the raucous fun and Homer is pleased to return to shore and his thoughts of Sandra. The season changes, people come and go but the lake remains as it always has been. In the end, the lake becomes the silent observer to the cycle that continues to recur and endure, summer romance and the maturation of the boy to manhood.
